Change and improve the appearance of your landscape and property by installing a Paver Driveway

How in the world does a Paver Driveway improve the appearance of my landscape is probably the first thought that comes into your mind.  Well to begin with, your driveway is probably the first thing everyone sees when they come to your home.  So changing the look and functionality of the driveway can not only change the appearance of your landscape, it will change the look and beauty of your home.

image_4Swan Creek Landscaping has designed, built and maintained unique driveways using Techo-Bloc pavers for the past 9 years.  We are a Certified Techo-Bloc Installer/Contractor for this industry leading provider of Pavers, Slabs, Permeable Pavers, Walls, & Outdoor Living Spaces including: Patios, Walkways, Retaining Walls, Steps, Driveways, Outdoor Kitchens, and Pool Decks.

What are the design considerations for a Paver Driveway?
The very first consideration is what materials and colors are pleasing to your eye.  We would surely recommend you consider using the outstanding designs and craftsmanship offered by Techo-Bloc who will present multiple patterns, colors, and styles of pavers for your selection.  Please do not be deceived; picking the right color and design is the toughest part of the project and will take some time.

Choosing the right materials and the related benefits:

  • Brick Paver Driveways – These materials (there are several to choose from) and the related design will focus on a classic, rustic, elegant look to your home’s exterior.
  • Permeable Pavers – Features include many attractive patterns and styles, but with an added feature of being “self-draining” which helps to prevent erosion and the opportunity for a flooded driveway.
  • Flagstone Pavers – Focuses on the classic, random patterned Maryland quarry stone look from the era of so many small stone quarries of the past. The classy look will bring out the beauty of any home.

IMG_4156Techo-Bloc has many pavers to choose from and we can send you a catalog upon your request.

You have picked the materials and colors and now it is time for the real design choices which begs the following questions: What size of driveway do you want?  Do you want a turnaround area?  Do you want you walkways to match the driveway?  Do you want a wraparound driveway?  Do you want a defined edging outlining the driveway?  Do you want to landscape and/or add plants to parts of the driveway?  Do you want the driveway to be lighted? Do you want a marque entrance added?

With many of the decisions made and your questions answered it is now time for your landscaper to start your driveway redesign, which should include the design patterns, materials, colors, construction plans, project timing and, of course, the cost of the project.

Swan Creek Landscaping, Inc. helps homeowners and businesses in Cecil and Harford Counties with all of their landscaping needs including new Paver Driveways to beautify your home and landscape. Critical Summer Lawn Maintenance

Keeping the yard looking great all summer long is the wish of most. Maryland summers brings with it the hot sun, high temperatures, dry periods, and sometimes high winds.  Occasionally getting the lawn ready to address the maintenance needs of summer can be overwhelming.  Swan Creek and help to eliminate your stresses with the regular Lawn Maintenance Care Program that takes care of all of your lawn issues.

IMG_3664Fighting the Weeds – Weeds need to be addressed early-on with some hard hitting efforts.  Weeds tend to move into your garden and yard when stressed is brought on from drought, heat or mowing to close.  The first thing weeds do is steal away moisture and nutrients from the healthy plants and grasses.
•   Gardens: You can control the weeds in your garden by spraying a non-selective weed killer which you can find at your Lawn & Garden Center or local Nursery – read the directions and make sure you follow them for best results.  Do not spray everything…protect the plants you like and are healthy.  Next spread down about 3” inches of mulch to keep the weeds under control.
•   Lawns: You can control the weeds in your lawn by making sure you are mowing at the right height.  Mowing the lawn high crowds out the weeds.  Also spot treat weeds as soon as you see them with a product labeled to address your specific type of weed(s).  Contact your Lawn & Garden Center.

Dog PictureWatering and Feeding – If you want a healthy garden and a green, heathy lawn you will have to make sure you are watering on a regular basis and feeding you plants and grasses in a timely manner.
•   Gardens: With garden plants you need to reach down and touch the soil to see if it has good moisture.  If not you need to water. But remember too much water can also be a problem. Do not wait until you see the leaves drooping…that is when they are begging for water.  If they do start to wilt make sure you “dead-head” the blooms of your flowering plants to keep them blooming longer.
•   Lawns: Your lawn will also need to be watered and fed.  This is key to a healthy Landscape. In drought conditions make sure you raise the height of your mower to create a longer grass stem.  You need to be feeding your lawn before the dry and hot months arrive.  If you are watering your lawn regularly you need to feed your lawn about every 6 to 8 weeks.  There are many companies with good lawn products. One that comes to mind is Scotts Green MAX Lawn Food which is a time released product.  If you are not watering your lawn and you start to see your lawn stressing, drying out, and creating brown spots, stop feed your lawn until it cools down and the rains come back.

April Showers bring May Grasses

IMG_2958Springtime is here and April showers are filling our earth with water.  You and your family can’t wait to be outside again soaking up the great Maryland weather and sunshine.  But April rains are causing flooding in your yard and may expose your yard to mold and diseases.  After the winter months, one key aspect of preparing your lawn for usage all summer and into the fall is Aeration.  The benefits of Core Aeration and the related Over-seeding of your lawn in the spring and/or in the fall are many.  Helping to eliminate surface flooding in your yard and enhancing healthy grass growth are just two:

1.   Aeration will reduces soil compaction.  Just as you wouldn’t try to plant a flower in concrete, a rock-hard lawn will hinder your ability to have great grass growth and may not allow your yard to absorb the April showers.  Factors that contribute to compaction ofyour lawn are foot traffic, heat, and a lack of water.

2.   Aeration reduces thatch.  Thatch is made up of grass stems and 1-Grassroots that accumulate faster than they can break down and can hinder healthy grass growth.

3.   Aeration allows access to the root system.  By digging down into the soil and pulling out soil plugs, you will be allowing moisture, air, and plant food to soak into the soil right down to the root zone where they are absorbed.Aerator

4.   Aeration enhances seeding and germination.  Once you open the soil by Aeration, you will want to follow-up with over-seeding.  Seeds germinate easily in aerator holes as the holes provide them a place to hide and touch open soil.  Over-seeding introduces new grass seed to fill in bare and/or thin spots as well as thickening up the existing grasses.

5.   Aeration and Over-seeding will loosen the soil to relieve the compaction, allowing it to breathe and help reduce the germination of weeds.  Aeration and Over-seeding will immediately allow the April showers to penetrate the soil and improve your lawn’s current appearance.

Swan Creek Landscaping, Inc. helps homeowners and businesses in Cecil and Harford Counties with Aeration and Over-seeding services that will enhance the look of your lawn while meeting all of their other landscaping needs.  These helpful hints and questions are just one way we serve our clients.  From design, to construction, to maintaining your property year round, we will provide you with a landscaping experience that will exceed your expectations.  When considering your Landscape, Hardscape or Lawn Maintenance needs, please give us a call for a free consultation on how we can turn your visions and our experience into an outdoor living experience you and your family will appreciate.

7 Tips for Spring Mulching

Applying mulch around your house landscape beds, around your trees, and throughout your flower gardens provides a neat, clean, eye-pleasing appearance to your landscape and also helps hold moisture in the ground and around the plants.  The following are 7 tips for your consideration that can save you some time and anguish:

IMG_01861. Buying Inorganic Mulch (man-made mulch) – This a ground covering product called mulch, but is really some other unnatural type of material: plastic, rubber, or other synthetic products.  Make sure you know what you are buying.
2. Buying Organic Mulch – This is a natural ground cover product that breaks down over time and works into your soils, making them richer.   Organic examples include wood bark & chips, fine needles, peat moss, processed wood pallets.
3. Let your nose be your guide – Scoop up a hand full of the mulch and see how it smells.   Is the odor too strong for placement around your home or does it have a sour smell?  Do not buy sour-smelling Mulch.
4. Is the mulch animal friendly? – During the processing of the mulch some added chemicals, coloring dies, or other agents that could cause harm to your family or pets if digested.  Check out the chemicals.
5. Previously mulched surfaces – If you are applying new mulch over last year’s existing mulch, take time to break it up with a rake or cultivator and work it into the ground.
6. Before applying the Mulch – Take an environmentally friendly “home defense pest spray” which is safe around humans and animals and spray around the foundation of your house to add a protective barrier against ants, termites and other insects.
7. Spreading the Mulch – Several tips:IMG_0220
• For best results, spread in the early spring (not on frozen ground)
• If there has been no rain and the ground is dry, water the area
• Feed your plants before spreading the mulch
• Save your time and energy by getting down on your knees and    spreading it with your hands (gloves needed) evenly around the plants, about 3” inches thick, but not up against the plants neck. Smooth the surface out with your hands.

10 – Easy steps to change your curb appeal

image_4Check out the home décor books, look over the garden magazines, and watch HGTV to learn about the many ways to change the look of your house and make it more appealing from the curb.  Many projects are expensive and can involve major time commitments and construction expertise to pull off, and you have limited resources. Adding curb appeal does not have to be expensive nor a major project.

Here are some quick and easy steps you can take to bring a new look to your home and landscape while adhering to a reasonable budget and time allotment:

1. Shutters can make the biggest difference in the appearance of your house.  Adding new ones or painting the old ones a new color is easy and inexpensive.
2. Lighting is a really inexpensive way to make a major change to your home.  Well placed, low voltage lighting is easy to install along with being a fun project.
3. White Picket Fencing is a project you can do with only a few hours of work.  You don’t need to fence the whole yard; fence just across the front walk or across your beds.
4. Front Door of any house is the focal point. If you have a great one, change the color.  If you need a new one, buy one that jumps out at you, that will be noticed.
5. Vines that grow on the walls of your house, on the corner of your garage, or up and over your pergola will not only add color but lots of curb and eye appeal.
6. Window Boxes will add new life to the front of your house.  Make your own or buy them from the garden center and install yourself. They look great!
7. Tree additions can make a big appearance difference.  A reasonably-sized tree placed on the corner of your house can change the look of your property quickly.
8. Mail Boxes can be an eye sore or a thing of beauty.  New ones are fully assembled, quick to install, and add a new dimension to the front of your house.
9. Accessories are another quick, easy, and within your budget way to make your house sparkle.  Think brass door knockers, door handles, door bells, and coach lights.
10. Walkways can dull, crack, or need a face lift over time.  A new brick or stone side walk can really change the look of a house.  Work with your landscaper on size, timing of the project, and materials.

5 – Landscaping tips for a March clean-up

IMG_0220Are you ready for spring?  At Swan Creek Landscaping we are ready, really ready!  We have completed maintenance on all of our equipment over the winter and now it is time to start getting our clients’ yards in shape for the summer.  Often times we are asked, “What do I need to do to get my yard in top shape for the summer and the start of ‘living outdoors’ again?”  Here are some quick tips for cleaning up your yard and your plantings:

1. First, do some pruning of the damaged and dead branches of your trees, shrubs, bushes and other perennial plants.  Using pruning clippers and a small yard hand saw, trim away the plants damaged parts and even some of the “overgrowth” to allow for the plant to breath and gather additional sun light.

2. Carefully clean up around the plants by raking out the leaves and dead foliage; often times this requires reaching in with your hands (don’t forget the gloves) and carefully remove the debris.

3. If you are planning on planting some spring bulbs, now is the time to spread some fertilizer, but read the label on the back of the package to ensure you do not over fertilize; sometimes this can do more harm than good.

4. Check to see if you have areas of damage to your lawn.  Grass does not start growing as early as some of your plants and bulbs. You might want to take a soil sample to check the pH and mineral levels, which will tell you if you need to add minerals and/or fertilizer to the damaged areas.  Most lawn and garden stores have an inexpensive pH test kit.

5. Now is the time to spray off or at least brush off and clean up your hardscape surfaces. Because you may have used salt, calcium, or other preventive slip-free minerals on walkways, sidewalks, and patio, you need to clean them. If the conditions are right, power washing the surfaces might bring the surfaces back to a “like new” look.

Take time to do some March clean-up. You will be amazed at how your landscape looks when spring really arrives.
